What's a young woman from the cornfields of Illinois to do?

Struggling with a touch of social phobia, I decided to get a breath of fresh air before going back to the conference room. I wondered how long before anyone noticed I was gone. The hotel grounds were lovely. Fragrant gardenias, roses and ferns lined the walkway. The tiled roofs of pastel bungalows lent an old world-grace. Show tunes drifted across the grounds from a patio bar. Sadly, the sight of couples communing in the romantic atmosphere tugged at my heart. The world of writing had left little time or energy for dating. I certainly could not be accused of misspent youth. At least the sacrifice was starting to pay off. I had received a $ 25,000 advance from my publisher. I imagined my mother bragging about my book being published at the village beauty salon. My parents had sacrificed to send me to college. Now I could start paying them back, not to mention my creditors.
The garden path led to a pond where swans floated among water lilies. It was like a scene from a fairy tale. Maybe I did belong here. A frog princess transformed by a book.
“I’ll never wait on tables again!” I declared.
“Perhaps not,” a man responded.
“What?” I turned startled.
A tall figure was standing in the shadow of a sycamore several feet away. The sunlight had faded into twilight.
“Miranda Ortega?” he asked with a slight accent.
“Yes?” I responded uneasily. “Did we meet inside?”
“No, you would have remembered if we had.” The most strikingly handsome man I had ever seen stepped before me. A thick mane of blond hair fell to his shoulders. He had a slightly jutting jaw and patrician nose. His complexion was pale without a blemish. His eyes were river blue. His mouth expressed a satisfied smile. A black silk suit draped his lean, muscular form. A starkly white shirt was left open at the chest. He wore a small gold medallion. Damn straight I would have remembered meeting him. At that moment, my brain was clearly registering attraction, anticipation and fear.
“And you are….”
“Someone you will want to know better.” He stepped closer, blocking the path.
The rape prevention course I took flashed before my eyes. I wondered if I could out-run him. It was getting darker by the minute. I regretted wearing high heels. I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down. Maybe I was over-reacting.
“You’re making me uncomfortable,” I said, watching his response closely.
“I was hoping to have the opposite effect.” He smiled. I breathed a little easier.
“If you’ll excuse me I have to be getting back.” He moved but slightly, allowing me little space to pass by him. He smelled of musk and primal forest. I inhaled slightly. Heady stuff. His cologne seemed vaguely familiar. I am 5 foot 4 inches and he was about a foot taller than me. I guessed he was about 30. His eyes seemed old beyond their years. I started to move past him. He gently put a hand on my arm, just enough to make me pause.
